What is open-end coding?
Open-end coding is the process of reviewing and categorizing respondents' verbatim answers into structured codes that can be analyzed quantitatively.
Open-ended questions allow respondents to answer in their own words. While this can provide valuable detail and unexpected insights, the resulting answers are unstructured and cannot always be analyzed directly in the same way as pre-coded survey questions.
Coding organizes these responses into meaningful categories while preserving the key themes and differences present in the data. This is done using a code frame - a structured list of categories, codes, and definitions used to classify answers. The code frame provides a consistent framework for coding verbatim responses and helps ensure that similar answers are coded consistently.
When is open-end coding performed?
Open-end coding is typically performed after data collection and after the relevant responses have been reviewed and prepared for coding.
Depending on the project, coding may take place while data collection is still ongoing or after the full dataset has been collected.
For some projects, an initial sample of responses can be reviewed to identify the main themes and develop a coding framework. The framework can then be applied to the remaining responses.
In other cases, an existing code frame or client-provided coding structure may already be available.
The timing and approach depend on the type of question, the number of responses, the expected level of detail, and the requirements of the research project.
