Data Validation in
Market Research

What is data validation?

Data validation is the process of checking collected survey data to identify errors, inconsistencies, incomplete responses, and other issues that could affect the quality of research results.

In online market research, validation helps ensure that the data collected is reliable, consistent, and suitable for analysis.

When is data validation performed?

Data validation is typically performed after data collection and before the dataset is finalized for analysis, tabulation, or reporting.

Depending on the project, validation may also take place throughout the data collection process to identify potential issues early.

At KID Statistics, we recommend carrying out soft data checks on approximately 10% of the sample as soon as sufficient interviews have been collected. This early review can help identify potential issues before they affect the wider dataset.

The results of this initial 10% check can provide an early indication of whether the questionnaire, survey programming, data collection process, or respondent data is producing unexpected results. If issues are identified, the checks can be expanded or corrective action can be taken before the entire sample is processed.

A 10% early soft-check can act as an early warning system. It can reveal potential problems while data collection is still in progress, rather than discovering them only after the full dataset has been collected and processed.

Why is data validation useful?

Validation helps identify problems such as:

  • Incomplete or invalid responses

  • Inconsistent answers

  • Duplicate or suspicious records

  • Responses that do not follow the expected survey logic

  • Invalid or unexpected data patterns

  • Technical or programming related problems

  • Logical or questionnaire-related issues

Identifying these issues before analysis helps research teams work with cleaner, more reliable data and reduces the risk of incorrect conclusions.

What are the risks of not validating data?

Without appropriate data validation, errors can remain hidden in the dataset and affect the research results.

Potential consequences include:

  • Additional costs - correcting data problems late in the project can require reprocessing, additional analysis, further checks, or even renewed data collection.

  • Delays in reporting - unexpected problems discovered shortly before delivery can delay tabulation, analysis, reporting, and the final presentation of results.

  • Loss of the research window - some research projects are tied to a specific period, such as an active advertising campaign, product launch, election, event, or other time-sensitive activity. If data problems are discovered too late, there may no longer be enough time to correct them while the research window is still relevant.

  • Inaccurate findings - errors or inconsistencies in the data can affect calculations, tables, analysis, and conclusions.

  • Reduced confidence in the results - clients and research teams may have less confidence in findings if data quality issues are discovered late in the process.

  • Additional pressure on project teams - urgent corrections can create unnecessary pressure for researchers, analysts, programmers, and other teams working toward a reporting deadline.

Early data validation helps identify potential issues while there is still time to investigate and address them.
